ARTIST NOTES: I reflected my concept through illustrating a story referring to the semi-autobiographical novel by Alexandre Dumas. The theme of this book, is ‘love is the right for all people regardless of caste and status’. This story changed my view on woman’s occupation entirely. Over the course of history, many literature has featured the “fallen woman.” Many books and even books in 21st century convince the society that prostitutes resides in a lower caste, and worthless of love. However, Alexandre Dumas’ character has redeemable qualities which challenged both society’s condemnation of the prostitutes and is a more realistic portrayal. This questions the stereotype that the society has towards women who trade their body.In this artwork, I reflected my view towards female sex workers, in reference mainly to La Dame aux Camelias. I want to empower women’s right to make choices of their own, regardless of the riskiness and inappropriate of the choice. I believe that every woman should be respected under a kind circumstance and all social class and nationality have the right to receive true love.
